Hangry Hen Farms Feature

Meet Tasha and the Hangry Hen Farms family from Kalkaska, Michigan! I had the pleasure of getting to know Tasha throughout her sponsorship role of our first-ever photo challenge on Instagram, themed around “A Few Of Our Favorite Things.”

Tell us a little about yourselves and your background.

I grew up on a farm in lowa and moved to Michigan to be a full time “Physical Therapist”. I quickly climbed the professional ladder and became the “Assistant Clinical Manager” on my way to being Clinical Manager. Though I realized I was still missing something. During the year of 2020 being quarantined and home from multiple surgeries, it showed me that I loved being at home with my animals, garden, and enjoying the simple things. I found that I enjoyed sharing my knowledge and helping my community enjoy “food” how it was intended to be, naturally raised with care in its freshest state. That’s how I returned to my roots and “Farm Fresh Delivery” and “Hangry Hen Farms” was formed.

Can you tell us a little more about Farm Fresh Delivery?

We offer a Summer produce delivery service under the name of “Farm Fresh Delivery“. We offer fresh in-season produce from our farm and some surrounding farms delivered straight to your door.

What initially drove you to homesteading?

The love for being outside and playing in the dirt. Plus there is something about growing and raising your own food. A sense of pride and joy, knowing that you get to enjoy what you put into it.

How long have you been homesteading?

My whole life! I grew up on a farm and continued to do different parts of homesteading even when I was in an apartment and early adulthood. Now that I have my own property it has expanded much more.

Can you tell us a little about the property you’re currently on?

We are on 30 acres that most recently has been clear cut. Which means it’s a blank slate with lots of treetops and brush all over the place. Unfortunately, there was nothing there when we started so all of our animal shelters, sheds, garden, fencing has been a work in progress.

What are some long-term goals you have from your homestead and garden?

To eventually have a barn where I can keep a few sows and goats to breed year-round. Expand our garden and continue to nurture the orchard we planted in the back of our property.

What is your favorite thing to grow?

Flowers. The hollyhock is my favorite.

What is your favorite animal to raise?

Chickens. I’m a sucker for green/blue eggs so the ameraucana is my favorite.

What are your favorite seed companies?

I’ve used
Eden Brothers for a few years and I’m happy with their prices and their successful germination.  True Leaf Market is another favorite; they have a wide variety of microgreens to choose from.

Do you have any other hobbies? What do you enjoy doing during your free time?

I love working out and continue to fill in as a Physical Therapist. No matter what it is I love helping people learn.

Are you working on anything right now that you’d like to promote?

Also working on more blogs/videos to answer peoples homesteading with #homesteadqna and how to be farm on a budget #frugalfarmingfriday
