Veteran-Owned Farms and Homesteads in Michigan
There’s no way to thank our veterans for everything they sacrifice for our freedom, but on Veteran’s Day we have to try. We’d like to highlight just a few of the veteran-owned farms and homesteads in our beautiful state of Michigan.
Hickory Tree Farm Apiaries
“Hickory Tree Farm Apiaries is a small scale sustainable apiary located in beautiful Kent City, Michigan. Our farm’s namesake comes from a large Shagbark Hickory Nut tree on the farm. When my mother was a little girl she would take refreshments to my grandfather under this tree as well as gather hickory nuts for Grandma’s Famous Fudge and it still stands today. My wife and I started HTFA in 2014 when I left my career with the US Marines. We have a deep passion by the land and wanted to farm it in a way that would compliment nature and the environment. The choice was simple! We would raise honeybees! After a few seasons by myself, I became a Heroes to Hives student and the rest is history.” Source: Hickory Tree Farm Apiaries
Hickory Tree Farm Apiaries offers not only honey and beeswax products, but educational workshops and, yes, bees!
Laetus Pullus Farm
“[Perry, Michigan’s] Laetus Pullus Farm started in 2009 when we decided to grow a large garden, purchase laying hens, and grow chickens for meat in order to know where our food was coming from. We feel that by eating off our land, we are eating more nutrient dense food than what is offered at the grocery store. We farm using organic practices and raise our chickens on pasture. Starting out, we raised just enough for the four of us but quickly learned that our friends and neighbors wanted farm fresh produce and meat too! So we now grow enough food to feed ourselves, preserve for winter, and extra for our customers.
We have both served in the U.S. Army in the Aviation field. Laetus Pullus Farm is certified as Homegrown by Heroes, the official farmer veteran branding program of America.” Source: Laetus Pullus Farm
Laetus Pullus Farm offers a wide variety of services and products, from poultry processing equipment rentals to custom wood processing, a farm stand, and more.
Majer Family Farm
“Majer Family Farms [of Whitmore Lake, Michigan] was started [several] years ago with the goal of showing my sons what’s possible when you work hard and put your mind to something. As we grow, the experiences we share throughout this journey will lay a positive foundation for years to come.
All the Hot Peppers we use for our spices and salts are grown right here at the farm. We believe in organic and sustainable growing practices! We started Beekeeping in 2018 and currently have four producing hives at the farm. Always learning, adjusting, and giving our bees the best opportunity to thrive in healthy productive hives.” Source: Majer Family Farms
Majer Family Farms’s shop includes an incredible variety of salts and spices, including gift sets!
Dancing Coyote Homestead
“Dancing Coyote Homestead is a family run, Michigan farm [in Waterloo] dedicated to heritage breeds and sustainable farming methods. At Dancing Coyote Homestead we are committed to ethically raised and harvested chicken, pork, and beef.” Source: Dancing Coyote Homestead
At the time of this article, Dancing Coyote’s website is under construction, but we urge you to follow them on social media.
